The Diviners: Chs 19-21

Next morning Evie has a hangover and fights with Jericho about nothing. Jericho once again teases us with the fact that he knows something is up but refuses to tell me what it is, spill Jericho, this book is so effing dull.

Guest Post: Race, Disability, and Sexuality in Hunger Games

Hello, Benjamin again. I’m doing a (brief) analysis post on race, sexuality, and disability in the universe of the Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins. I’d promised to do something like that in my snarks of Ballad, and settled on race because some of it is actually close to my area of proficiency (ethnic studies). The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Final Chapter and Epilogue

Snow is told that he’s the youngest person ever to be accepted for officer training school, and he’ll be shipped off to District 2 for elite officer training instead of being trained on-base. Once he’s dismissed, he muses about how ironic it is to have a second chance at success only after he’s decided to run away. This would all work better if this wasn’t a prequel, but it is what it is.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Chapter 29

Snow is pretty fucked up the next day. He tries to rationalize what he did, saying that Sejanus would’ve fucked up, it was his own fault, that he was forced to do it. He gets physically sick when he eats a cookie Sejanus’ mom made, and can’t get the memory of the hanging from his mind. He’s upset about Sejanus and his mother, as well as his own family. It’s pretty decently done.
