Well, while Diana takes a nap in her magic pit, we get to switch over to Matthew’s POV. Joy. He’s all upset at Diana being missing. Ysabeau has called in a previously-unknown older brother to help track her down, since Baldwin is so good at tracking.
Baldwin is the head of this family.
Fuck, really? Even in vampire-land, only the men get to be heads of families? Ysabeau is older (evidenced by the fact that she made Baldwin) but she’s not allowed to be head? She’s just around to sit around and be the stereotypical judgmental mother-in-law?
Baldwin shows up, and he’s yet another aggressively cruel cartoon. He doesn’t like that Matthew ‘married’ a witch and would rather just kill her in order to have her out of the family. There’s also a fuckton of pointless backstory as they all sit around and talk about why Baldwin and Ysabeau hate witches. (They helped kill Matthew’s daddy.)
Blah, lots of verbal fighting, long story short: Matthew won’t give up Diana, so Baldwin kicks him out of the family. Matthew says fine, but you’re out of the Knights of Lazerus, and my group is snazzier than your family, so nya nya nya.
That gets Baldwin to relent and help track Diana. Um, question, is he still disowned? Ah, seems no one actually cares.
Then we get more backstory about the family, and the text keeps talking about Philippe’s “three sons,” but it lists four. Baldwin, Hugh, Matthew, and Godfrey. Did one of them die? But in that case, Phil still had four sons, just only three would be living. So what gives?
Louisa [the sister] had been useful as bait or as a spy, depending on the situation.
Oh, fuck you, book. I mean, it’s bad enough you relegate her to that role when the guys get to plan battle strategies and negotiate treaties, but ‘useful’? Like it’s not even something she wanted, was good at, or did for her own reasons, no, she was just a tool for the boys to use.
Oh, also, seems Marthe and Ysabeau knew about Diana’s being ‘spellbound.’ Thanks, we learned that last chapter, but go ahead and pad out your word count by revealing it a second time.
They figure out where Diana is mostly through educated guessing, then get on a helicopter and head off to the castle.
